In Japan, a pair of tea cups or rice bowls are called "meoto jawan", or "happy couple's cups (bowls)" and are regarded as ideal wedding or anniversary gifts.
The tea cups shown here have the "three friends of winter" design, or the combination of pine, bamboo and plum, a traditional pattern symbolizing longevity, prosperity and happiness, respectively. The designs are painted in between the traditional green and red Kutani patterns.
They are for drinking Japanese tea, but of course are beautiful just to look at.
Comes in a wooden box with artist's signature.
